Research Paper Grading Rubric

Your research paper, which will serve as the final exam in this class, will be evaluated using the following rubric:

A. Meaningful sociological question (5 points)
To earn this credit, you will have posed an interesting and important sociological question and provided the context (Why is this interesting and important? What sociological insights might come from answering it?) for that question in the introduction of the paper.

B. Appropriate data source (5 points)
To earn this credit, you will have identified a data source for your question, read in the data from this source into your Colab notebook for analysis in the form of a DataFrame, explained the data source in the paper in the form of a data biography, and reflected critically on the limitations of this data source.

C. Appropriate statistical analysis (15 points)
To earn this credit, your paper will describe the correct analysis (with regard to the research question and the kind of data available) and include a Colab notebook with annotated code describing how you conducted the analysis.

D. Demonstrated sociological reasoning (15 points)
To earn this credit, your paper will engage in appropriate and theoretically-informed interpretation of the results of your analysis, drawing appropriate conclusions and suggesting a plan for further analysis.

E. Creativity (10)
To earn this credit, you will have written an engaging paper that successfully models professional communication of social science research. The paper will have the proper organization and the writing will be free of spelling and grammar errors, and will use well-formed ASA citations.
